At Mars Belgium the Five Principles Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, Freedom can be found at the core of the company philosophy. It is therefore very naturally that they have committed to calculating their environmental and CO2 impact and are actively looking to reduce it. Whilst there is still a lot to be done positive results can already be observed with the production unit at Olen having reduced its energy consumption by 10% in the last four years as well as having reduced its waste production by 60% over the last seven years. The plant received the Olen environment award in 2008 for these achievements. The company has also calculated the CO2 impact of their office and administration at Sint-Stevens-Woluwe and has switched to green renewable electricity. They are also offering all employees eco driving lessons to reduce their fuel consumption as well as putting numerous other initiatives in place. “The environment and climate change are preoccupations that Mars is taking very seriously. As a world leader in the food sector Mars seeks to ensure that it is a responsible company. Reducing ones Carbon footprint also helps a company become more efficient and therefore reduce costs” says the General Manager, Philippe Henry de Frahan To take things a step further Mars Belgium has decided to offset its remaining emissions to become “CO2 Neutral” for it’s in-house CO2 emissions related to its head office and administration in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (car fleet, commuting, heating, electricity, paper consumption and waste) for the year 2009.
