Transport is one of the major sources of CO2 emissions in the European Union. The transport sector accounts for 21% of greenhouse gas emissions. The EU transport system is currently not sustainable, and in many respects moving away from sustainability rather than towards it. Quite naturally CO2logic supports the transit towards more efficient transport systems. The high speed rail system offers many benefits and opportunities in this respect.
CO2logic welcomes the recent news that the air transport of individuals between Brussels National Airport and London City Airport will be halted from 17 july 2009. According to ADEME figures planes are responsible for approximately 10 times more CO2-emissions per passenger journey than high speed rail. This example is further evidence that that travelling by high-speed rail is both the better and the greener alternative for short haul travel. It is the combination of environmental credentials, faster journey times, comfort and city centre to city centre travel that has seen the surge in popularity of high speed rail. CO2logic looks forward to further expansion of high-speed rail services from Brussels to Amsterdam and other destinations in the years ahead.
